About The Centre
Swindon Therapy Centre for Multiple Sclerosis (Formerly Swindon Friends of A.R.M.S.) has its basis as a self-help group, which has grown and developed over a number of years.
Swindon Friends of A.R.M.S. was formed as the local branch of the national charity A.R.M.S. (Action & Research for Multiple Sclerosis) in 1981 offering Physiotherapy and dietary advice to members. A 2 person divers decompression chamber was purchased in 1983 so that High Dosage Oxygen Therapy (HDOT) could be added to the range of therapies.
In 1984 a therapy centre was opened at the Deloro Industrial Estate in Stratton St Margaret, Swindon. In 1986 the original chamber was replaced by a purpose built 6 person chamber specifically designed to ease the treatment of people with MS.
In 1989 the lease on the original centre expired and the premises were sold at short notice and after a short break new premises were found at BSS House on the Cheney Manor Industrial Estate in Swindon and therapies restarted, once the centre had been fitted out.
In April 1992 the parent national charity (ARMS) went into receivership and some Centres around the country sadly closed. By August 1993 Swindon Therapy Centre had become an independent unit and by 1995 a private limited company by guarantee, like many of the other MS Centres following the demise of ARMS.
Since that time the Centre has continued to offer
therapies, advice and support to MS people and their families in Swindon
and the local area being the only Centre within a 35 - mile radius of
Swindon. The Centre plays an invaluable role in the local community
since it provides services not available through the National Health
Service, indeed many doctors refer patients to the Centre. The group's
activities are a lifeline for its many members and their families, who
are actively encouraged, through mutual support, to face the reality of
Multiple Sclerosis and the possible challenges it brings.
The therapies offered by the Centre are a major
contribution to the fight against MS. Not only does the group offer
support, but also practical solutions to problems and help with day
to day living.
In 2008 the Centre started treating other conditions,
such as Strokes, Parkinsons Disease, as well as children with Cerebral Palsy,
Autism and brain injuries, as all these conditions can benefit from the
oxygen therapy, physiotherapy and other therapies we offer.
Our staff is on hand to help and advise. If you would like to know more please call in and see us. You will be very welcome!
